Liberty's Bell

Copyrighted by Lance A. Johnson

Before each rodeo begins, at the start of each hometown parade,
A cowboy proudly rides as The Colors are displayed.
His horse’s hooves are prancin’ as he rides to and fro,
While, upon the breeze above him, The Colors proudly billow.

The cowboys quickly rise and remove their hats from their head,
Then fold their arms inward and place them on their hearts instead.
Then, as they take their stance, in the silence of the crowd,
“Oh say, can you see,” rings out long and loud.

Then, deep within their hearts, without the slightest hedge,
They repeat the sentiment contained within our nation’s pledge.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God,
Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

And, midst the rocket’s red glare and the bombs bursting in air,
The cowboy’s thoughts drift, till they aren’t even there.
Instead, they’re thinking of comrades who were lost overseas,
As the stars and the stripes billow on the breeze.

And, somewhere down deep, they swell up with pride,
For they know, for the moment, they have stemmed the tide.
Still evil runs rampant and tyranny strong,
And right cannot triumph when people do wrong.

So, “God bless America again,” is my humblest and deepest request,
And He could, He would, and He will, if only we’d not speak in jest.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God,
Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

You see cowboyin’ ain’t just ropes and rawhide, but true grit as well,
And a dedication to the red, white, and blue, which, o’er time, does swell.
For cowboys are known for their honesty and, in truth, it’s easy to see,
It is our pledge whereby we each have the right to be free.

For our oath is taken to God, not to a tyrannical snake:
Who desires to be at the helm with The People all in his wake.
This, then, is freedom’s foundation, a commitment to equality’s cause,
Rather than mere subjugation to mankind’s rules and laws.

Thus it’s time to cowboy up, it’s time we stick to our guns;
It’s time we each take The Pledge, before Liberty, her course, runs.
So, pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God,
Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

So let her wave upon the breeze, let her billow, let her fly,
As a call to arms to all to either do or die.
So cowboy keep on ridin’, let your horse proudly prance,
But know the colors which you fly are there by God and not by chance.

For she has been defended by those who’ve served their country well,
May time add to their number and help their ranks to swell.
For they are among the chosen few, the ones who did not hedge:
When called upon to risk their all in honor of The Pledge.

So may you too hear freedom’s call and take the place of one who fell,
As upon the field these words ring as the gong upon liberty’s bell.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God,
Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
